What modern, secular Turks fear most is that if the ruling Islamist AKP lifts the turban [Islamic headscarf] ban in universities, the next step would be allowing Islamic attire in high schools and in public service too. Under the headline, “Turban In Public Space”, the mainstream Turkish daily Milliyet published today many photographs taken by its reporters depicting turban being worn by doctors and other employees providing service in state hospitals, and students wearing Islamic headscarves in public high schools.
